explorer and map maker
Samuel De Champlain was a French explorer and navigator who mapped much of northeastern North America and started a settlement in Quebec. Champlain also discovered the lake named for him (Lake Champlain) on the border of northern New York state and Vermont. He helped set up the French colonies in the new world.
Samuel De champlain's travels
Samuel Champlain made maps. He loved making maps. He made maps by sight and by doing his own math. He made the first map of New England and Canadian coast from Cape Sable to Cape Cod. He drew Port Royal; Frenchman’s Bay; the St. John, St. Croix, Penobscot, and Kennebec Rivers; and many islands—including Mount Desert. Champlain named Mount Desert himself.
